I was driving back to school yesterday and was making a turn in the apartment complex I live in. There was a light dusting of snow but nothing that had me concerned. I have made that turn a million times, it was practically second nature, and because of that I was probably going to fast. I hit the brakes, turn the wheel and nothing happens, I just keep sliding straight. Underneath that light dusting of snow was sheet ice. I go into panic mode and simply try to limit the damage.
In a major stroke of luck I missed the large solid mound of ice by 6 inches or so, and on the other side missed a tree by about 2 inches. At this point I’m wedged on a large chunk of ice and the exhaust is sounding very bad. I got some help from some of the people that lived around there and we got the car out and I’m on my way. It still drives but sounds really bad. I’m worried that I punched a hole in the exhaust or jacked up the manifold or something else catastrophic. I took it into a shop this morning, and a few minutes ago I got a call back. Dreading to hear the damage he tells me all thats wrong one of the flanges got bent and it’ll cost $60 to fix. I just about cried with joy.
So yeah, fucked up, but got insanely lucky with the consequences.

You took it to a shop and they only charged you $60? Mustve been something stupid simple like an exhaust flange became unbolted or something

Yup, just a bent flange.

Shouldn’t be too bad. Sounds like a bent flange to me. Might cost you $60 to repair.

I went to go turn into my driveway on some snow a few days ago and nearly plowed down my fence instead. Apparently braking from 5mph in snow in the car I’m driving now will make the ABS kick in. Just a hard lesson in how unpredictable winter driving can be, I guess. Glad you lucked out with the repairs!

This is what happens in the South. We get rain or sleet during the day, freezes overnight, and sometime in the early morning turns to snow. Come outside after waking up, see half an inch of snow and think, “Oh, that’s not so bad.” First hill we come to, the ice makes its presence very, very known. Followed by elitist northerners laughing at us. :-P

had a similar thing happen. Was driving down a country road and approached a “15 mph suggested speed” turn. I’ve taken this turn before, and I thought “oh the usual 25-30mph will be fine!”
at that very moment, I see something on the roadway.
Oil.
“Fuck.”
I hit the brakes, but nothing happens, and I wind up careening in to a field right behind the turn. Luckily there was no drop-off from the road, or else I would’ve been stuck.
I missed a power pole by about a foot to my left, and I missed the sign on my right by about 2-3 inches. Luckily, I had momentum, and after mowing down some crops (sorry farmers!) I was back on the road heading for the local gas station to asses the damage. Besides a slightly fucked up alignment form going off-road at 25 mph, being coated in dirt, and a shitload of what I believe to be corn in the grille, the car had no damage whatsoever!
